Recognized Excellence: The 2025 Awards
The Guide to the best wines of France 2025 from La Revue du Vin de France once again recognizes Alsatian excellence. At the top, the Riesling Grand Cru Brand 2022 from Domaine Zind Humbrecht obtains the exceptional score of 99/100, a rare recognition which salutes a wine of crystalline purity.
The Domaine Weinbach, nestled at the foot of the Schlossberg, produces a Riesling Grand Cru Sainte-Catherine rated 98/100, a perfect expression of this granite terroir which gives the wines an incomparable minerality. The estate, run by the Faller family for five generations, perpetuates a tradition of excellence while respecting the environment.
Exceptional Terroirs
Understanding the great wines of Alsace means first of all understanding the extraordinary diversity of its soils. From the granite of Schlossberg to the limestone marls of Hengst, from the pink sandstone of Muenchberg to the volcanic soils of Rangen, each terroir leaves its unique signature on the wine.
- Riesling: The undisputed king of Alsace, it expresses a breathtaking aromatic complexity in these great terroirs, mixing citrus fruits, white flowers and characteristic oily notes.
- Pinot Gris: Opulent and generous, it develops notes of ripe fruit and spices of great finesse on marl-limestone soils.
- Gewurztraminer: Exuberant and fragrant, it is the grape variety of seduction, with its aromas of rose, lychee and oriental spices.
The Emblematic Domaines
The Domaine Albert Boxler in Niedermorschwihr produces Rieslings with surgical precision, particularly on the grand crus Brand and Sommerberg. The Domaine Marcel Deiss, pioneer of terroir blends, revolutionizes the traditional approach by favoring the expression of the place over that of the grape variety.
The Trimbach house and its legendary Clos Sainte-Hune, Albert Mann and its single-plot vintages, Dirler-Cadé biodynamic: so many names that make Alsace shine on the greatest tables in the world.
The Art of Tasting
These nectars deserve special attention. Served between 10 and 12°C, they flourish in suitable glasses which allow the aromas to fully develop. Great Rieslings can be stored for several decades, gaining in complexity over time.
