The three prestigious golf courses of the Grand Est: UHNWI guide to playing in Alsace like nowhere else in Europe

April 25, 202610 min read

The Grand Est is one of the least known – and most interesting – golf destinations in Europe. Three exceptional courses, in three radically different universes, within a radius of less than 90 kilometers: the Kempferhof, ranked among the ten most beautiful golf courses in Europe, designed by the American architect Robert Von Hagge on 85 hectares on the banks of the Rhine. The Golf de La Wantzenau, designed by Jean Garaïalde, with its Alsatian-inspired architecture and its numerous water obstacles. The La Largue Golf Course, on the borders of France, Germany and Switzerland, at an altitude of 430 meters in the Sundgau, with a view of the Vosges. Complete guide for those who know what they are looking for.

Golf in Alsace is unlike any other golf course in France. It’s not just about the route — it’s about the territory. Playing a game at Kempferhof on a misty autumn morning, with the Rhine invisible but present through the century-old poplars and oaks that Robert Von Hagge preserved when designing the route in 1988, is to understand that certain courses could not have existed anywhere else. The earth, the light, the water — everything is specific to this piece of Rhine plain between Plobsheim and the river.

The Grand Est has three exceptional courses, each of which deserves a stay in its own right, and which together form a unique golf destination in Central Europe - as long as you know how to approach them. This is exactly what Adopts a Concierge: build tailor-made golf stays, from departure reservations to dinners with winegrowers, including boutique accommodation and corporate arrangements.

The Kempferhof — when the Rhine becomes a playground

Created in 1990 in Plobsheim, fifteen minutes south of Strasbourg, the Kempferhof is the best-known and most cited golf course in the Grand Est. Regularly ranked among the ten to thirty best courses in Europe according to the rankings, it owes its uniqueness to the personality of the site as much as that of its architect. Robert Von Hagge — known as Bob — said he was immediately struck, during his first visit, by the feeling of mystery that the property gave off. Fog over the fields, trees blending into the distance, the particular atmosphere of a Rhine plain which really belongs neither to France nor to Germany, but to itself.

The result is an 85-hectare course where water is present on sixteen of the eighteen holes — not as a decorative obstacle, but as a character in its own right. The plan ofThe 150-meter water that separates the tee from the green of hole 14, the pond that precedes the double green of hole 18 — these obstacles are not random traps. They say something about the geography of the Rhine plain and the way Von Hagge chose to stage it rather than transform it.

The estate is currently under development: a new resort comprising 45 luxury rooms, a 1,600 m² spa, a bistronomic restaurant with 150 seats, a microbrewery, a bakery and an events space is under construction. For corporate stays and golf incentives who wish to anticipate, this is a real opportunity to position themselves on a resort which will, in the long term, be among the most complete in Alsace.

La Wantzenau — the Alsatian golf course in all its grace

The Golf de La Wantzenau occupies a particular position in the panorama of Alsatian courses. Designed by Jeremy Pern and Jean Garaïalde - one of the best French professional golfers of his generation - it spreads over 72 hectares about ten kilometers north of Strasbourg, in a natural area bordered by forests and crossed by the arms of the Rhine. The architecture of the clubhouse takes up the codes of the Alsatian village, with its half-timbering and its terrace opening onto the course.

What distinguishes La Wantzenau is the abundance of its bodies of water - a character which sometimes reminds us of Florida courses - combined with steep greens which reward the precision of putting more than the length of the drive. The fauna is exceptional: coypus, swans, ducks, beavers populate the banks of the ponds and constitute a permanent spectacle that changes with the seasons. For a UHNWI golfer arriving from New York, Dubai or Seoul, the contrast with the world's major golf destinations is stark — and that's exactly what they'll like.

La Largue — the route to the end of the Franco-German world

The Golf de La Largue is, of the three courses, the one which requires the most intentionality to reach it - and which rewards this effort the most generously. Located in Mooslargue in Sundgau, a few kilometers from the triple Franco-German-Swiss border, at an altitude of 430 meters, it extends into a landscape of forests and hills which has nothing in common with the Rhine plain of Kempferhof or the wetland of La Wantzenau.

Designed by Jeremy Pern and Jean Garaïalde, the 27-hole championship course — including 18 competition holes — is considered the most diverse in the trinational region. The La Largue river, which crosses the site, is in play on many holes and gives its irreplaceable natural character to the course. The men's slope reaches 144 — a number that clearly says this course is no walk in the park. The environment is completed by a luxurious spa, a gourmet restaurant — Le Mulligan — and a bistro for post-game lunches.

Eight questions about prestigious golf stays in the Grand Est

Is the Kempferhof Golf really classified among the most beautiful golf courses in Europe?

Yes — and this ranking is based on objective criteria. The Kempferhof is regularly cited in the rankings of the ten to thirty best European courses by several international reference golf publications. Its uniqueness lies in the quality of the natural integration of the course into its Rhine territory, the technical diversity of the holes, the quality of maintenance of the fairways and greens, and the character of its architecture - signed Robert Von Hagge, who designed or rehabilitated several of the most remarkable courses in Europe and North America. For a golfer who knows the great European courses and wants a comparable experience in France without being limited to traditional regions, the Kempferhof is a must.

QuellIs the best season to play the golf courses of the Grand Est?

The Grand Est offers a seasonal palette that few regions can match. Spring — April to June — is the season of revelation: the trees are resuming their foliage, the greens are at their best maintained after winter, and the Alsatian light has that special quality of the misty morning that transforms into a bright afternoon. Summer is the high season — the routes are accessible, the Wine Route in full splendor — but also the busiest. Autumn is for many the most beautiful season: the oaks and beeches of the Kempferhof turn red and ocher, the low light of September afternoons is incomparable, and the number of visitors diminishes. Winter allows you to play certain courses depending on the conditions, with an atmosphere of absolute solitude on the Kempferhof for example.

Can Adopt a Concierge organize a complete golf stay including accommodation, reserved tee times and gastronomy?

This is precisely our core business in this territory. We build tailor-made golf stays which include the reservation of priority departures on the three courses, the choice of accommodation - chateau-hotel at Kempferhof, character apartments in Strasbourg, mansions in Sundgau for La Largue - dinners with wine growers on the Wine Route selected for their relationship with the table, transfers in prestigious vehicles, and complementary activities for non-golf companions: cellar tastings, walks in the villages wineries, private tours of the Strasbourg Christmas market outside the standard season. A golf holiday in Grand Est organized by Adopte une Conciergerie is not a golf holiday. It’s a discovery of Alsace where golf is the common thread.

Are the three golf courses suitable for a corporate or business incentive stay?

Yes — and it's one of our most active segments. The Kempferhof has seminar rooms, an event infrastructure currently being developed with its new resort, and a field which lends itself to group competitions between partners. La Wantzenau offers an ideal configuration for incentive days combining golf and dinner on the clubhouse terrace. La Largue — with its gourmet restaurant Le Mulligan and its spa — is the most complete option for stays of one to two nights integrating relaxation, games and gastronomy. Adopte une Conciergerie is the first corporate concierge service in the Grand Est positioned on this type of organization: we manage invitations, transfers, reservations, catering, and if necessary accommodation on the site or in the region's castles and estates.

How to access the courses from Strasbourg, Basel or Mulhouse?

The Kempferhof is a 15-minute drive from the center of Strasbourg — fifteen minutes from Meinau or Orangerie. La Wantzenau is about ten kilometers north of Strasbourg, accessible in 20 minutes. La Largue is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes from Strasbourg and 40 minutes from Basel-Mulhouse — it is the most naturally accessible golf course for travelers arriving via Basel-Mulhouse airport, which serves a very large Swiss, German and international clientele. We organize transfers from all these points of arrival — Strasbourg and Basel-Mulhouse airports, Strasbourg station for TGV arrivals from Paris — in a prestigious vehicle, with a driver who can serve as a contextual guide to the territory.

Can we combine a day of golf at Kempferhof with a visit to the Alsace Wine Route?

Not onlyIt’s possible — it’s one of the most cohesive combinations we offer. The Kempferhof is 30 minutes from the first Grands Crus of the Wine Route. After a morning on the route, the natural program is to go back to Obernai, Barr or Riquewihr for lunch in a winstub or a winegrowers' restaurant that we select for their authenticity as much as for their quality. The afternoon can include a private tour of an estate — Zind-Humbrecht, Hugel, Trimbach or a lesser-known but noteworthy producer that our local networks allow us to introduce directly. This type of day — golf in the morning, wine and gastronomy in the afternoon — is the format that comes up most often in the requests of our international golf clients visiting Alsace for the first time.

Is the Golf de La Largue suitable for golfers of all levels or reserved for experienced players?

The Golf de La Largue offers two configurations: the 18-hole championship course, with a gentlemen's slope of 144, which is suitable for players with a reasonable handicap and sufficient experience to manage hilly and technical terrain — and a 9-hole course with easier access for less experienced players or those wishing a shorter round. La Largue with its spa, gourmet restaurant and bistro is also a complete destination for non-playing companions: a non-golfer can spend an excellent day at the spa and restaurant while the group plays. This is why we often recommend La Largue for mixed golf/non-golf stays.

What other services does Adopte une Conciergerie offer in addition to a golf holiday in the Grand Est?

The golf trip is an entry point, not a limit. Around the golf course, we can organize: a private dinner with a starred Alsatian chef (Auberge de l'Ill in Illhaeusern, La Fourchette des Ducs in Obernai, among others); a private visit to wine estates with tasting of classified Grands Crus; a day at Europa-Park for families with children; a private excursion to the Black Forest or Switzerland for travelers wishing to discover the triangle of three countries; a transfer from or to Switzerland for customers residing in Basel, Zurich or Geneva. We also manage all concierge needs during the stay — last minute reservations, laundry service, arrangement of luxury rental cars, access to luxury real estate for longer stays.

There are areas where golf is played. And there are regions where golf is part of a territory larger than itself — one that deserves to be experienced in its entirety, from the first hole in the morning to the last bottle in the evening.
