History of Riviera Luxury — From Royalty to Billionaires

March 27, 20262 min read

From Queen Victoria to 21st-century oligarchs, the Côte d'Azur has fascinated the powerful for two centuries. A journey through the golden saga of the French Riviera.

The Côte d'Azur did not appear by chance. It is the fruit of two centuries of elite fascination with this sun-blessed coast. From the first British winterers to today's tech billionaires — the story of a golden destiny.

British Origins (1834–1900)

It all began in 1834 when Lord Henry Brougham, former Chancellor of England, was forced to stop in Cannes due to a cholera epidemic. Charmed by the mild climate, he built a villa and wintered there until his death in 1868, bringing the entire British aristocracy in his wake. Queen Victoria regularly stayed in Nice and Menton in the 1880s–1890s.

The Belle Époque and Russian Aristocracy (1900–1914)

The early 20th century brought a wave of Russian nobility. Tsar Nicholas II frequented Nice, where the Russian community built the Saint Nicholas Cathedral — the largest Orthodox cathedral outside Russia. Grand dukes acquired sumptuous villas on Cap d'Antibes and in Villefranche-sur-Mer.

The American Golden Age (1920–1960)

The Roaring Twenties transformed the Côte d'Azur into a summer destination. Gerald and Sara Murphy literally invented summer holidays on the Riviera in 1923. F. Scott Fitzgerald immortalised the era in Tender Is the Night. Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956; Brigitte Bardot launched the legend of Saint-Tropez the same year.

The Billionaire Era (1990–Today)

Since the 1990s, the Riviera has attracted global fortunes: Russian oligarchs, Saudi princes, tech magnates. Cap Ferrat properties reach €100 million. Monaco's port hosts superyachts worth over a billion. Today, the Côte d'Azur remains the most sought-after destination for Ultra High Net Worth Individuals, with over €30 billion in luxury real estate.
