Gérardmer: The Temple of Luxury Linen and the Textile Tradition of the Vosges

February 24, 20263 min read

For centuries, Gérardmer has perpetuated exceptional textile know-how. Journey to the heart of a tradition that adorns the most beautiful houses in the world.

Gérardmer, nestled in the heart of the Hautes-Vosges, is much more than a mountain resort. It is the cradle of a centuries-old textile tradition which has made French household linen famous throughout the world. A living heritage where excellence is woven over generations.

A History Woven of Know-How

The textile history of Gérardmer goes back several centuries, when every family in the Hautes-Vosges grew their linen. When winter came, the women spun while the men weaved, producing linen of remarkable finesse. This family tradition gradually industrialized in the 19th century, without ever losing its soul.

The meadow bleaching technique, which consisted of spreading the canvases on the grass and watering them regularly, used the natural virtues of pure water, ozone, dew and sun to obtain a white of exceptional purity. Gérardmer today represents more than half of national textile bleaching production.
