The three prestige golf courses of Grand Est: an UHNWI guide to playing in Alsace like nowhere else in Europe

25 avril 20268 min de lecture

Grand Est is one of the least known — and most rewarding — golf destinations in Europe. Three exceptional courses, in three radically different settings, within a radius of less than 90 kilometres: Kempferhof, ranked among the ten finest golf courses in Europe, designed by American architect Robert Von Hagge across 85 hectares beside the Rhine. Golf de La Wantzenau, designed by Jean Garaïalde, with its Alsatian architectural spirit and abundant water features. Golf de La Largue, at the tripoint of France, Germany and Switzerland, at 430 metres altitude in the Sundgau, with views over the Vosges. A complete guide for those who know what they are looking for.

Golf in Alsace resembles no other golf in France. It is not only a question of course — it is a question of territory. Playing a round at Kempferhof on an autumn morning of Rhine mist, with the river invisible but present through the poplars and century-old oaks that Robert Von Hagge preserved when he designed the layout in 1988, is to understand that certain courses could only have existed in one specific place.

Grand Est has three exceptional courses, each deserving a dedicated stay, which together form a golf destination unique in central Europe. This is exactly what Adopte une Conciergerie does: build bespoke golf stays, from priority tee time reservations to dinners with wine producers, character accommodation and corporate arrangements.

Kempferhof — when the Rhine becomes the course

Created in 1990 in Plobsheim, fifteen minutes south of Strasbourg, Kempferhof is the most celebrated course of the Grand Est. Consistently ranked among the ten to thirty best courses in Europe, it owes its singularity to the personality of the site as much as its architect. Robert Von Hagge recalled being struck, on first visiting the property, by a sense of mystery it exuded — mist over fields and woods merging in the distance, an atmosphere particular to a Rhenish plain belonging neither quite to France nor Germany but to itself.

The result is an 85-hectare course where water features on sixteen of eighteen holes — not as decorative obstacles but as characters in their own right. The 150-metre water hazard separating tee from green on hole 14, the pond preceding the double green on 18 — these are not random traps. They speak of the geography of the Rhine plain and Von Hagge's choice to stage it rather than transform it.

The estate is undergoing significant development: a new resort with 45 luxury rooms, a 1,600 m² spa, a 150-cover bistronomic restaurant, a microbrewery, a bakery and an events hall is under construction — one of the most complete golf resorts in Alsace upon completion.

La Wantzenau — Alsatian golf in all its grace

Golf de La Wantzenau occupies a distinctive position in the Alsatian course landscape. Designed by Jeremy Pern and Jean Garaïalde, it unfolds across 72 hectares ten kilometres north of Strasbourg in a natural zone bordered by forests and Rhine tributaries. The club-house architecture recalls the Alsatian village, with its timber framing and terrace open to the course. The abundance of water features — reminiscent of Florida courses — combined with sloped greens rewarding putting precision over driving length, and remarkable wildlife on the water's edges, makes this course a sensory experience unlike the standard.

La Largue — at the edge of the Franco-German world

Golf de La Largue is, of the three, the course requiring the most intentionality to reach — and the one that most generously rewards the effort. At Mooslargue in the Sundgau, near the triple Franco-German-Swiss border, at 430 metres altitude, its championship course of 27 holes — 18 of competition — is considered the most technically diverse in the trinational region. The La Largue river runs through the site and comes into play on numerous holes. Slope rating of 144 for men. Complemented by a luxury spa, a gastronomic restaurant — Le Mulligan — and a bistrot for post-round lunches.

Eight questions on prestige golf stays in Grand Est

Is Kempferhof genuinely ranked among Europe's finest golf courses?

Yes — and this ranking rests on objective criteria. Kempferhof is consistently cited in the top ten to thirty European courses by several international golf reference publications. Its singularity lies in the quality of the course's natural integration into its Rhenish territory, the technical diversity of the holes, the quality of fairway and green maintenance, and the character of its architecture — signed Robert Von Hagge, who designed or rehabilitated several of the most remarkable courses in Europe and North America. For a golfer who knows the great European courses and wants a comparable experience in France beyond the traditional regions, Kempferhof is essential.

What is the best season to play the Grand Est golf courses?

Grand Est offers a seasonal palette few regions can match. Spring — April to June — is the revelation season: trees regain their foliage, greens are at their best post-winter condition, and Alsatian light has that particular quality of misty morning transforming into luminous afternoon. Autumn is for many the most beautiful season: Kempferhof's oaks and beeches turn russet and ochre, September's raking light is incomparable, and visitor numbers decrease. Summer is peak season — all courses accessible, Wine Route in full splendour — but also the most frequented.

Can Adopte une Conciergerie organise a complete golf stay including accommodation, tee times and gastronomy?

This is precisely our core competence on this territory. We build bespoke golf stays integrating priority tee time reservations on all three courses, accommodation selection — Kempferhof chateau-hotel, character apartments in Strasbourg, master houses in the Sundgau near La Largue — dinners with Wine Route producers selected for the quality of their table, prestige vehicle transfers, and complementary activities for non-golfing companions: cellar tastings, vineyard village walks, private Christmas market visits. A Grand Est golf stay organised by Adopte une Conciergerie is not merely a golf stay. It is an Alsace discovery whose thread is golf.

Are the three courses suited to a corporate or incentive stay?

Yes — and this is one of our most active segments. Kempferhof has seminar rooms and event infrastructure developing with its new resort. La Wantzenau is ideal for incentive days combining golf and club-house terrace dining. La Largue — with Le Mulligan restaurant and its spa — is the most complete option for one to two night stays integrating relaxation, sport and gastronomy. Adopte une Conciergerie is the first corporate concierge in Grand Est positioned on this type of organisation: we manage invitations, transfers, reservations, catering, and accommodation on-site or in regional chateaux and estates.

How does one access the courses from Strasbourg, Basel or Mulhouse?

Kempferhof is 15 minutes by car from central Strasbourg. La Wantzenau is ten kilometres north, accessible in 20 minutes. La Largue is approximately 1h15 from Strasbourg and 40 minutes from Basel-Mulhouse airport — making it the most naturally accessible course for travellers arriving via Basel-Mulhouse, which serves a significant Swiss, German and international clientele. We organise transfers from all arrival points — Strasbourg and Basel-Mulhouse airports, Strasbourg station for TGV arrivals from Paris — in prestige vehicles, with a driver who can serve as a contextual guide to the territory.

Can a day's golf at Kempferhof be combined with a visit to the Alsace Wine Route?

Not only is it possible — it is one of the most coherent combinations we offer. Kempferhof is 30 minutes from the first Grand Cru vineyards of the Wine Route. After a morning on the course, the natural programme is to drive up toward Obernai, Barr or Riquewihr for lunch in a winstub or wine producer's restaurant selected for its authenticity as much as quality. The afternoon can include a private estate visit — Zind-Humbrecht, Hugel, Trimbach or a lesser-known but remarkable producer our local networks allow us to introduce directly. This format — golf in the morning, wine and gastronomy in the afternoon — is the most frequently requested by our international golf clients visiting Alsace for the first time.

Is Golf de La Largue suited to all levels, or reserved for experienced golfers?

La Largue offers two configurations: the 18-hole championship course with a slope rating of 144, suited to players with a reasonable handicap and sufficient experience to manage a hilly and technical terrain — and a 9-hole course of easier access for less experienced players or those wanting a shorter round. With its spa, gastronomic restaurant and bistrot, La Largue is also a complete destination for non-golfing companions. This is why we frequently recommend La Largue for mixed golf/non-golf stays.

What other services does Adopte une Conciergerie offer alongside a golf stay in Grand Est?

The golf stay is an entry point, not a limit. Around the golf, we can organise: a private dinner with a starred Alsatian chef; a private wine estate visit with Grand Cru tastings; a day at Europa-Park for families with children; a private excursion to the Black Forest or Switzerland; transfers from or to Switzerland for clients residing in Basel, Zurich or Geneva. We also manage all concierge needs during the stay — last-minute reservations, pressing service, prestige car rental arrangements, access to premium properties for longer stays.

There are regions where one plays golf. And there are regions where golf is part of a larger territory — one that deserves to be lived in its entirety, from the first hole of the morning to the last bottle of the evening.
