Dom Pérignon vs Krug: Two Philosophies of Prestige Champagne

Single vintage versus multi-year blend, stainless steel versus oak barrels… A deep dive into two absolute icons of prestige champagne.

10 AVRIL 2026|Adopte Une Conciergerie

In the pantheon of champagne, two names reign supreme: Dom Pérignon and Krug. One invented the myth of the winemaker monk, the other elevated blending to the rank of supreme art. Two radically different philosophies, one shared goal: absolute perfection.

Dom Pérignon: The Quest for the Perfect Vintage

Dom Pérignon is exclusively a vintage champagne. If the harvest is deemed unworthy, no Dom Pérignon is produced. In over 100 years, only 45 vintages have been declared.

45Vintages Declared in 100+ Years

Vinification uses stainless steel tanks, preserving fruit purity. Aging reveals three “plenitudes”: P1 (8 years), P2 (16 years), and P3 (25+ years).

Krug: The Supreme Art of Blending

Krug Grande Cuvée blends over 120 wines from 10 different vintages. Fermentation occurs in 205-litre oak barrels, creating unmatched complexity and richness.

120+Wines in the Grande Cuvée

Krug also produces single-plot cuvées: the legendary Clos du Mesnil (pure Chardonnay from a 1.84 ha plot) and Clos d’Ambonnay (Pinot Noir).

“The Grande Cuvée is our most ambitious dream: to create the most generous champagne possible every year, beyond the constraints of a single vintage.” — Maison Krug

The Tasting Experience

A Dom Pérignon P2 2004 opens with candied citrus, toasted brioche, and grilled almond, with striking mineral tension. A Krug Grande Cuvée 171st Edition offers ripe fruit, acacia honey, hazelnut, and spice with exquisite finesse.
